                                             GLOSSARY

A transformer with primary and secondary windings physically separated by
ISOLATING TRANSFORMER design to permit magnetic coupling between isolated circuits whilst minimizing
                           electrostatic coupling.

A load in which the relationship between current and voltage is directly
           LINEAR LOAD
                           proportional.

               KW Kilowatt, 1,000 watts.

KWH Kilowatt hour, one kilowatt for one hour.

Kilovolt-ampere, or thousand volt-ampere. When multiplied by the power factor,
              KVA
will give kilowatts, or KW. Most transformers have their rating expressed in KVA

Conductive material placed around a transformer’s coils to attenuate stray
        MAGNETIC SHIELDING
                           magnetic fields.

A method of temperature regulation in which the normal convection of ambient
       NATURAL CONVECTION
air surrounding the transformer will provide its only cooling.

NOMINAL VOLTAGE The normal designed voltage level.

NON-LINEAR LOAD A load in which the relationship between current and voltage is not directly
                           proportional.

The relationship between voltage, current and resistance. The current in an
OHM’S LAW electrical circuit is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional
                           to the resistance.

OPEN FRAME A method of transformer construction.
